The Joint Action Committee formed in connection with the alleged rape of Kshetrimayum Ongbi Tombi Leima has demanded that the co-accused currently in police custody should remain in detention till the main culprit namely Ng Abothe alias Thapa (26) has been arrested.
Briefing media persons about the incident at Manipur Press Club today, JAC president S Manglemba said modesty of 27-year old Tombi Leima was outraged by Ngangom Abothe s/o Ng Birchandra on June 17 midnight when the victim's husband Ksh Tomba was out of home to watch Euro football match in the locality.
It is said that Abothe entered the victim's house by cutting through the mud/reed/straw wall with a sickle to open the door lock, and used the same sickle to threaten Tombi Leima that her throat would be slit if she screams for help.
Both Tombi Leima and Abothe are from Phougakchao Ikhai Mamang Leikai under Moirang police station in Bishnupur district.
Based on Tombi Leima's assertion that she also spotted one O Ibomcha walking away along with the perpetrator Abothe after the later committed the crime.
Moirang police apprehended Ibomcha after both the victim's family and locals filed an FIR report at Moirang police station on July 21, said the JAC president.
He also informed that the FIR was lodged after Ibomcha in his capacity as the president of Lamthabung Area Voluntary Association/Club tried to cover up the incident by intimating Tombi Leima and her husband for a negotiated settlement.
Even though Ibomcha has been taken into custody by the police, Abothe is evading arrest, informed Manglemba who also conveyed that the JAC has decided to launch intense agitation in case Ibomcha is set free before capturing Abothe.
