Decrying the alleged apathy of the Government towards the farmers of the State, members of All Manipur Progressive Farmers' Association (AMPFA) held a rally today at Thangtek Loukon in Imphal West.
The farmers urged the State Government to declare the State as 'drought-hit, while also demanding adequate compensation to the farmers who have been affected badly by the scarcity of rain.
While also demanding the Government to frame a long-term agriculture policy to counter natural calamities such as the one experienced this year, the demonstrating fanners have further urged the Government to take up necessary measures for the affected farmers.
Altogether, 500 hectares of paddy fields of Thangtek Loukon were said to be affected by the drought like situation.
The demonstrators lamented that the situation could have been averted had the Government come up with a long term policy to confront such calamities.
