Silchar, July 24 2020:
Manipuri Youth's Front Assam (MYFA) in association with youths and meira paibis of Lamargram Khunou organised an awareness campaign for inclusion of Manipuri language as an associate official language of Assam at Mahadev Mandir, Lamargram Khunou under Sonai Constituency in Cachar.
At the event, MYFA's general secretary lamented that Assam's CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has neglected the issue and their demand, though Manipuri language is taught in schools and colleges.
Manipur's Chief Minister N Biren, during the World Meitei Convention, had assured all sort of assistance to ensure the rights of Manipuri diasporas residing in Assam.
As assured, the CM should convert his words into action and work to make the demands of MYFA heard to his counterpart in Assam, he said.
In the meantime, MYFA's finance secretary Chittaranjan Singh, maintained that the collective effort of all Manipuris in Assam is required to voice their grievances and seek their rights.
Otherwise, the Manipuris in the State will continue to remain pressed and bereft of their rights, he said.
Ch Nabakumar Singh, who is a retired Principal, said that the MYFA's campaign was started as per a resolution taken by various Manipuri bodies in Assam on June 21 at Lakhimpur and all should extend support in demanding such a rightful provision.
Ch Loidam Devi; Oinam Birendra, Chingsubam Nabakumar Singh; A Lily Singh, president, AMMPAL; Ema Sanathoi, vice president of AMMPAL; Seram Herajit Singh, president of MYFA; general secretary Okram Lakhikanta and Th Sabitri attended the event as the presidium members.
Meanwhile, the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has endorsed the movement carried out by Manipuris in Assam, demanding the recognition of Manipuri language as an associate official language of Assam.
In a statement issued today, the students' union maintained that the Assam Government should uphold the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 1992.Stating that there is no provision of applying for government jobs in Manipuri even though Manipuri is studied as a language in Assam, AMSU maintained that the State Government should not remain a mere spectator in this issue.
AMSU also asserted that they will fully support the Assam Manipuri Students' Union, Manipur Youths' Front Assam and every Manipuri in Assam in their movement until Manipuri language is made the associate official language of Assam.
