Governor of Manipur Gurbachan Jagat today visited Churachandpur district and released a memoir of (L) T.C.Tiankham, IAS officer (Rtd) and Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly after the first election held under the Manipur Constitution Act in 1947. The Governor was accompanied by his wife, Kiran Jagat during the book releasing function held at Lalpuithluaii Foundation School, a private school run by Vunglallian Tonsing, the eldest son of late TC Tiankham.
Born in Khawdungei, Mizoram in 1913, Tiankham passed away on 17 Aug, 1996 at the age of 83 years.
In 1940, he married his wife, Lalpuithluaii Sailo.
He completed Class X from Govt.High School, Silchar in 1938, and BA from Scottish College, Calcutta in 1944. After Manipur got independence from the British, Tiankham was a member of the Manipur State Constitution-Making body and went on to be appointed as Cabinet Minister in the Interim Council, thus becoming the first non-Naga Cabinet Minister in Manipur.
After the first election was held under the Manipur Constitution Act in 1947, Tiankham became the first Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly.
However, after the merger of Manipur with the Union of India, he joined the State Service and rose to the level of Secretary.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Jagat hoped that the memoir of Tiankham would provide few insights into the period when Manipur was in transition.
