Manipuri mountaineers who successfully scaled Mount Everest - the world's highest peak - recently as part of the first North east Mt everest Expedition 2013 and NCC expedition team were accorded warm public welcome today.
While Manipur Mountaineering & trekking Association in collaboration with the Observation Committee of 12th Great June Uprising Unity Day (AMUCO, UCM) organised a reception function at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium for all the successful climbers of the State another reception programme was hosted by Patsoi Part I-IV Joint Development Organisation at Unikhong Bazar Patsoi community hall for two of the expedition members, who are from Patsoi Assembly Constituency.
Apart from the successful climbers namely N Bidyapati Devi, N Chingkheinganba and Puyamcha Mohon, who were in the NE expedition team, Ch Sankar and Ph Bidyachand of the NCC team, and NE team leader Dr L surjit and expedition doctor Dr L Nelson; N Robert and James Waribam, who could not complete the feat, were also among those honoured at the Khuman Lampak reception programme.
While N Bidyapati earned the distinction of being the first successful lady to scale Mt Everest from Manipur, Chingkheinganba briefly held the record of being the youngest Indian to reach the peak days before 15-year old Raghav Joneja re-scripted the record.
Expressing extreme elation that a number of Manipuri climbers summitted the world's highest peak, UCM president Y Nabachandra stated that the people should continue to extend all possible assistance and moral support to the State's sportspersons and adventure sports enthusiasts so that more glory is brought to Manipur.
AMUCO president KT Rahman and social activist RK Ranendrajit also hailed the State climbers.
At Unikhong bazar the reception programme was held with Social Welfare Minister and Patsoi AC representative AK Mirabai Devi as the chief guest.
The chief guest also handed over Rs 50,000 each to Dr L Surjit and N Chingkheinganba, both from the assembly constituency.
Informing that the Government of Manipur has already approved cash award to all the five successful climbers from the State, she also stated that a reception programme would be organised by the Government very soon.
