Imphal, January 23, 2011:
Various social changes taking place in the society affect one's language.
It is important to study the changes in Manipuri language, said Dr Mangangcha Thoudam Achou, Lecturer Oriental College in a symposium held at JN Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal today.
The Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti organised the symposium as part of the 115th Birth Anniversary of renowned poet Khwairakpam Chaoba under the theme 'Manipuri Lolgee Houjik Honglakliba Saktam'.
Speaking in the occasion, Dr Achou said that changes in a language correlate with many changes in the society.
Manipuri language is the only medium language in which people of the different communities residing in the state communicate through.
People should use whatever word available in the language while communicating.
Unfortunately many people are using English or other language in place of Manipuri language while communicating and writing books.
In a speech, retired Professor Elangbam Dinamani, Manipuri Department, Manipur University said that everyone in the state should take collective responsibility to develop the Manipuri language.
While using all available words in the language, unavailable words in Manipuri language should be borrowed from other language and used as Manipuri.
English language which has the largest vocabulary in the world has many words from many languages which are use as its language.
Professor N Khagendra, Convener, Manipuri Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi New Delhi was the moderator of the symposium.
President, Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti, Professor Polem Nabachandra was also in the dais.
