Poacher penalised, released

Leikai, who was arrested by Bishnupur police on January 27, for
hunting water birds using Carbofuran has been released by CJM
Churachandpur after penalising a fine of Rs 2000 yesterday.
He was arrested in a joint operation conducted by police
and the volunteers of Pole Star Guardians' Association
(POSGAT), Thinungei and Indian Bird Conservation Net-
work (IBCN), Manipur.
IBCN State co-ordinator RK Birjit said that many dead
birds were recovered from Loktak lake area of Thinungei
Mamang Leikai yesterday and today as well.
Species classified under Convention of Migratory Species
are included among the birds found dead at the area, he said.
Birjit urged the authority concerned to check illegal hunting
of birds as it is harmful to consume the birds which are
poached using toxic substances.
Chief Wildlife Warden PN Prasad said that Divisional
Forest Officer would be sent to Thinungei to identify the
species of the birds recovered from the area.
After receiving a report from the officer, the Department
would study the possibilities of approaching the Court, he
said.
