The World Deaf Day was observed today at the Government Deaf and Mute School, Takyelpat here under the aegis of Lions Club of Leimarol, Imphal District 322-D of Lions Clubs International.
The observance function was graced by past District Governor of Lions Club of Leimarol, T Satyapriya and president of Lions Club of Leimarol, Imphal, Dr H Ibemhal as the chief guest and president respectively.
Other dignitaries who attended the function included Dr P Rajmani, zone chairperson; T Sanatombi, headmistress of Deaf and Mute School; Dr Th Bidhumukhi; Dr Bilashini and T Kunjarani.
Free health check-up of students of the Deaf and Mute School marked the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, T Satyapriya highlighted the commitment of the Lions for the upliftment of the disables.
Expressing optimism that the disabled could be shaped as prominent citizens and leaders, Satyapriya also stressed on the need to instill hope in them.
Delivering the presidential address, Dr Ibemhal said that the Day has been observed to show reverence to the deaf and mutes.
She egged on the students to cherish and pursue their goal with determination while urging them to follow the footprints of Helen Keller, a deaf and blind American who shot to international fame despite her disability.
She further said that people living with deaf and mute and blindness should not lose courage.
There is no rule that handicapped persons could not become the Prime Minister or the President of the country.
Every man, if worthy, can become leader of the country.
So, there is no reason for living with self pity of being handicapped, she said.
Presenting the students with sports items, Dr Ibemhal also said that the presents given to the students are to show how much the students are being cared for.
