Senapati, March 24 2015:
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Imphal and Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal have predicted rainfall in the entire State is unlikely in the next couple of days.
Wave of water scarcity and rush for water sources have become a visible activity in many parts of the district.
However, the most disheartening matter remains the helplessness of the State Government to reach out to the people with a solution.
With the failure of mega projects like Water Augmentation Project sponsored by NLCPR under DoNER Ministry, the present scheme of IWMP which is in its initial stage of implementation is still far from harvesting its objectives to tackle the present drought like situation.
It may be noted that, NLCPR water projects in Senapati District have failed to deliver its expected result as iron pipes laid along the intended villages and places are non-functional and either stolen or destroyed.
People rely on water hand pumps installed in few villages.
Reports from different parts of the District have confirmed the alarming sight of decreasing water sources.
Sources from Mao, Tadubi, Paomata, Maram, Maram center, Senapati DHQ and Kangpokpi areas has stated that, water scarcity has become the main problem.
Through the service of the Water tankers and Tata mobile with plastic tanks, residents are paying Rs 50 paisa or Rs 1 for every litre of water while in some villagers have to walk miles to fetch water.
It is also reported that Barak river, Senapati river, Kangpokpi river and other water streams are drying up fast which have been not witnessed in previous years.
