Imphal, March 24 2015:
A resident of Hafiz Hatta in Imphal East has decried alleged eviction for the construction of a Trade cum Exhibition Centre in a short notice.
At the same time, the affected family, who are now taking temporary shelter at a neighbour's house has appealed to the Govt to provide adequate compensation.
Khundrakpam (O) Modhubala (50) w/o Indrakumar has accused the Govt of evicting their family in a very short notice.
The family was given just 15 minutes notice to vacate their residence which also has a grocery shop, Modhubala told this reporter.
She said that the family has resided at the location since the past 20 years.
They are not even able to re-locate grocery items of the shop before the eviction.
SDO of Porompat on July 23 last year ordered eviction of 12 residents of the locality.
The drive was halted after evicting some two/three houses.
The rest was evicted on August 11, 2014, she said while adding that not even a month's notice was given to the affected residents.
Modhubala said they continued to occupy their residence as no further eviction drive was taken up since August last year.
However, on March 22 last, a team of officials led by Commerce and Industries Minister K Govindas, including DC and SP of Imphal East came and evicted them after 15 minutes notice.
Grocery items worth about Rs 2.70 and properties worth about Rs 5 lakh and other items were lost, she said.
Accusing the Govt of not obtaining prior informed consent of the affected people, Modhubala further maintained that the Govt should compensate them.
The family hailed from Ningthoukhong.
They have a daughter who is a BA 6th semester student.
They are also staring at the grim prospect of losing their daughter's career, who is gripped with mental disturbance due to the sudden eviction.
