Stricter penalty for rapists demanded

Condemning the gang rape of two minor girls by seven individuals on the night of April 14, various women organisations of the State have demanded the authority concerned to develop stricter laws for punishing rapists to prevent such heinous incidents from happening in the future.
At a press meet organised by Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup, Imphal East (NLANL-I/E District), Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup, Imphal West (NLANL-I/W District), Thoubal District United Women Development Organisation, Apunba Nupi Lup, Bishnupur district, All Manipur Muslim Women Development Organisation (AMMWDO) and Ereibak Enaat Chanura Loinasilon (EECHAL) at NIPCO office, Keishampat Lairembi, Th Sakhi, president of AMKIL, strongly condemned the incident and stated that the seven women organisations would fully support the mass rally organised by the core committee formed regarding the case.
She urged the authority concerned to form new laws which grants death penalty to rapists in order to curb the ever increasing cases of rape in the State.
NLANL I/E district president Y Mema also demanded strict punishments for the rapists.
She further appealed the people not to organise further Thabal Chongba events as Yaoshang festival has ended long ago and such events are often the cause of disturbances and unwanted incidents.
A sit-in-protest was staged by womenfolk of Kangla Sangomsang and Neta Club at the locality today in protest against the alleged gang rape of two minor girls by seven youths at Phaknung on April 14 night.
Talking to media persons, one of the women protestors said that the incident is yet another instance of the raging crime against women in the State.
She demanded the authority concerned to take up strict action against the rapists at the earliest.
She pledged that women folks of the locality will take part in protests to be staged against any form of crime against women.
She also urged the State Government to take up effective measures to curb crime against women and children in the State.
