Tree plantation campaign begins at Wangjing; Tree saplings planted at Tekcham, Bal Vidya Mandir

Thoubal/Imphal, August 18 2019: Badminton Lamjing Lup (BLL), Wangjing launched mass tree plantation campaign at Wangjing Hodamba Laibung today to counter the changing climatic condition on earth and the global warming to some extent.

BLL Wangjing in association with various Clubs and locals of Wangjing will plant trees in the region on massive scale and will take care of the tree saplings so that they can grow to full maturity, said L Boy, member of BLL.

Members of Eastern Social Welfare Youth Club (ESWYC) Hodamba, Wangjing Heitupokpi United Progressive Union (WHUPU), distinguished personalities and public took part on the first day of the campaign.

On the other hand, a tree plantation drive organized by Forest Dept together with SDAU Tekcham was conducted at Tekcham High School playground in Thoubal district today in the presence of Principal, Khongjom Standard English School, L Samananda Singh; AE PWD, Th Komolo Singh; Deputy Ranger, Thoubal Forest Division, M Biren Singh; Secy SDAU Tekcham, L Rosan Singh and Honarary Wildlife Warden, Thoubal Forest Division, W Ramchandra Singh.

Members of PSO Tekcham, students and locals also took part in the drive.

Regarding the plantation drive, Principal Khongjom Standard English School, L Samananda Singh said that the tree plantation drive was conducted to fight the present drastic change in climatic condition to some extent which is caused by large scale deforestation across the globe including Manipur.

Such tree plantation drive will educate the public about the significance of planting trees in fight against global warming and hope that the future generation may develop the habit of planting more trees to preserve the nature, he added.

Meanwhile, as part of its 1st meeting of the newly elected executive committee members, the Shiksha Vikash Samiti, Manipur has planted tree saplings at the complex of Bal Vidya Mandir, Palace Compound Imphal today.

Shiksha Vikash Samiti, Manipur, president Y Khogen Singh; vice presidents N Munal Meitei; Sunita Gupta; organising secretary, Sitaram Bhat and general secretary M Chourajit Singh attended the programme.

At the event, N Munal Meitei urged all to contribute in saving the environment from further degradation.

Now-a-days, as a measure to save the degraded environment, mass tree plantations are being carried out continuously in Manipur, he said and further urged all to nurture the planted seedlings to ensure its growth.

Stating that trees are being felled at an alarming rate in hills areas which shared about 90% of our State's geographical area, Munal conveyed that it is near to impossible to conserve the environment and ecology of Manipur without conserving the hills areas.

He also said that about 3 to 5 sq km of forest areas are cleared on daily basis mainly for the firewood and other land use purposes at an average.

The major consumption of these firewoods are by the mushrooming brick fields in the State, which consumed about 3 to 4 tons of firewood daily and annually it burnt about 1000 tons at an average, Munal added.

He then continued that to save the environment of Manipur in true sense, indiscriminate felling of trees must be controlled.

In today's executive committee meeting of the Shiksha Vikash Samiti, Manipur, it was resolved to take up similar plantation programmes in other schools under the Samiti in Manipur.
