Imphal, March 13 2014 :
Setting 24 hours deadline to the Government for release of eight of its office bearers, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) cautioned that not honouring the demand will constrain the students' body to launch series of agitation.
According to DESAM vice president Arambam Thoithoi Singh eight head office and unit office bearers have been taken into police custody this afternoon on the charge of locking up the Secretary's office of the Board of secondary Education Manipur.
Naming the detained office bearers as president M Angamba, secretary (Organisation) Y Yaiphaba, deputy secretary (Orgn) O Shital, deputy secretary (games & sports) Devadutta Sharma, deputy secretary (finance) O Premjit, deputy secretary (finance/Imphal West) Mangijao, secretary general (Wangoi Zonal Council) KC James and executive member (head office) Surjit Meetei, Thoithoi said the arrest was made from near the Nityaipat Chuthek office of BJP Manipur Pradesh at around 2.30 pm.
After sealing office of the Board's Secretary currently occupied by L Rajmohon as the Secretary in-charge a police team apprehended the eight functionaries, he said.
Explaining that the Secretary's office was sealed to protest functioning of the Board under secretary in-charge Rajmohon, whose service superannuation was on February 28, 2014 as well as to remind the Government as declared in the past that part-time appointments of such important post will not be tolerated, the vice president decried continuation with Rajmohon at such an important juncture when the Board-conducted HSLC is underway.
Contending that there are a number of competent individuals who fulfil prescribed RRs to replace Rajmohon, he also observed that delay in appointing a regular Board Secretary testifies that the Government is either encouraging corruption in appointment or trying to overlook deserving candidates.
Demanding that the Government effect appointment of Board's Secretary without further delay, he also reiterated that detention of the eight arrested DESAM functionaries beyond the specified deadline would amount to inviting intense agitation against the Government.
