Imphal, March 06 2020:
A five day training on artificial insemination for dairy farmers was organised by Intensive Cattle Development Project (ICDP), Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Service, under Krishi Vigyan Kendra Thoubal concluded at ICDP Porompat today.
Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Service Director Dr H Chaoba, PO, ICDP Porompat Dr Kh Santibala, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Thoubal project coordinator Dr Jeshmarani Sarangthem and Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Service Joint Director (Adm) Dr Ng Ibotombi attended the function as presidium members.
Speaking at the function, Dr Chaoba said that the Prime Minister launched the Nationwide Artificial Insemination Programme (NAIP) on September 11 to enhance milk production and maintain accurate breeding in all breeds of bovines.
Normally, a local cow reared in the State can produce one and half litre of milk in a day, which is not even sufficient to feed its calves, he said while adding that the continuous artificial insemination has effectively increased the milk production in the State.
Earlier, the milk production was set between 78,000 to 81,000 litres but, the production has increased by 85,000 litres more.
Dr Chaoba urged all the cattle farmers to discuss the option of artificial insemination with the experts in Veterinary Department so that they can avail the benefits and opportunities that their profession offers.
Saying that the process can be carried out successfully in the valley as there is proper access, he mentioned that there are still some inconveniences for artificial insemination to work in the hill areas.
The cows, reared in the hills, are set free as a group and it is not easy to conduct the process, he added.
Altogether, 30 trainees, who were nominated by KVK Thoubal, participated in the training.
Demonstration of how to perform artificial insemination in cattle and hands-on training were given apart from imparting various knowledges.
