Imphal, March 06 2020:
With the aim of spreading greenery to the barren farmlands of the State, 16 members of the Apunba Loumi Lup Yumnam Khunou Imphal East, under the aegis of C AU, are engaging in planting around 6 hectares of Arnan peas and 4 hectares of Makhayat Mubi peas.
During a trip to the area yesterday, general secretary Laishram Brojen of the organisation, told The Sangai Express that last year, peas and mustard (seeds supplied by Agriculture, Horticulture and KVK Imphal East CAU) were successfully cultivated at an area of around 4 hectares.
He then pointed out that the current peas crop is all organic and can be relished without any worries about negative health impacts.
He remarked that under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanism (Smam) scheme, the Agriculture Department provided a tractor to the farmer group and it has benefited not only the group, but the people of the locality and surrounding areas as well.
However, there were no relief measures from the authorities' side concerning the recent drought faced by the State, he claimed adding that the canals from Dolaithabi barrage have also failed to provide their intended benefits to the people as well.
He further mentioned that the farmer group borrowed water sprinklers to ensure that the current peas crop grew properly despite the harsh climatic conditions.
Many farmers of Yumnam Khunou are also engaged in mushroom farming and making compost fertilizers, he added.
Expressing desire for the farmland to be properly prioritized by the Agriculture Department, he explained that without fanners, there will be nothing to eat.
