Imphal, March 06 2014 :
With agreement regarding the demand for requisite qualification and higher salary scale remaining elusive inspite of holding talks with the Government representatives, All Manipur Elementary School Teachers' Association (AMESTA) has decided to continue with its earlier plan of relay hunger strike with immediate effect till their demands have been honoured.
Speaking to newspersons near Khoyathong Pukhri Achouba, where Association members launched relay hunger strike from today, AMESTA general secretary Shantakumar said that since February 13 the members had been on sit-in-protest at the same venue to highlight their plight.
Informing that a special general body meeting of AMESTA convened on March 8 would decide further course of agitation in case the Government continues to ignore their demands, Shantakumar said in sync with an earlier resolution Association members joined the relay hunger strike today.
While appreciating the recent order for keeping in abeyance decision to downgrade teachers under the Education (S) Directorate, he nevertheless regretted that no positive measures are being initiated to settle the issue at hand.
