With a view to enable teachers impart quality education to young students, Slopeland College of Teachers' Education was opened today at Salt village, Khongjom, Thoubal district.
The college would begin secondary level BEd course from the current academic year.
Due approval for setting up the college was given by the National Council for Teacher Education, Eastern Regional Committee on February 25 this year.
Moreover, College Development Council, Manipur University has already issued Letter of Intent for opening BEd course in the college.
Speaking to media persons in the college hall today, college secretary N Babulin formally declared that Slopeland College of Teachers Education has been opened.
Slopeland Public School trust chairman N Ibobi, research executive Kh Nabachandra and vice-principal W Modhuchandra were also present at the meet.
National Council for Teacher Education, Eastern Regional Committee gave its approval for opening the college after its team made spot assessment twice with video coverage.
MU College Development Council then gave its Letter of Intent after due inspection.
The maiden session of the college for BEd course would commence from the first week of June this year.
Altogether 100 students may enrol for BEd course for the academic year 2014-15 .
If more than 100 candidates apply for the same course this year, there would be some sort of screening.
It is being considered to give preference to in-service candidates, Babulin said.
There are a number of schools and colleges in Manipur but few institutions for training teachers, Babulin said.
It was after due consideration of the growing need for training teachers on the modern methods of teaching that the Slopeland College of Teachers Education was set up, he added.
