Imphal, March 06 2016:
A National Theatre Festival jointly organised by National School of Drama and Chorus Repertory Theatre has kick started at Shrine Playhouse of Chorus Prefecture on Kangchup road today.
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar and Art and Culture Commissioner K Radhakumar graced the opening function of the festival as chief guest and president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the function, O Ibobi said that although theatre was a significant and powerful medium in the past, it has started losing its popularity with each passing day.
As such, all the organisations concerned and individuals must put in collective effort to retain its real essence, he said.
Saying that Manipur is a State known for its sporting talents and rich cultural heritage, the Chief Minister observed that required moral and physical support must be extended to the artistes to frame a cultural policy.
On the other hand, he expressed deep concern over imposing huge monetary demand on the film fraternity of the State and assaulting a filmmaker brutally.
Saying that Manipuri cinema is still alive due to the hardwork and passion of these filmmakers and film lovers, O Ibobi urged the concerned not to disturb them in future.
If the art lovers are disturbed, the State would never be able to leap forward in the field of art and culture, he said.
Theatre Director Ratan Thiyam said that although Manipur has a rich cultural heritage, the State lacks in nurturing it.
As a result, cultural awareness among people is declining day by day, he said.
Chorus Repertory Theatre's 'Macbeth' was staged on the opening day of the festival that will continue till March 12 .
