Awareness programme on NBA, NRDWP held

A public awareness session on 'Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan' (NBA) and 'National Rural Drinking Water Programme' (NRDWP) organised by Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) was conducted today at YMC Ground, Haraorou of Khundrakpam assembly constituency.
According to director of Communication and Capacity Development Unit L Swamikanta Singh NBA is one of the 16 flagship programmes of the Government of India under which awareness along with necessary assistance is extended towards development/construction of toilets in the rural areas.
Erstwhile known as Total Sanitation Campaign, NBA emphasises on ensuring healthy and hygienic lifestyle in rural area by ensuring toilet in each rural households and local educational institutions, said the director further highlighting that for sanitary latrine could be constructed with minimal expenditure of about Rs 6000 .
For BPL card holder an individual family needs to deposit only Rs 700 with the remaining material cost provided under NBA, Swamikanta maintained adding that within two months 185 households of Haraorou would be provided assistance for sanitary latrine construction.
Speaking at the occasion, Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker Th Lokeshwar Singh prevailing upon the people of Khundrakpam AC to avail benefits under various flagship programmes of the Government declared water would be made available round the clock in Haraorou village within a day or two compared to the present two-hour supply.
Making his intention clear to make Haraorou the first village in Manipur with 24-hour water supply so that the local populace could concentrate on more important issues of life, he conveyed the State government's focus on egalitarian development in both the hill and valley areas.
Superintending Engineer (Planning & Monitoring) of PHED Ph yaima Singh in his brief comment stated that ensuring potable water throughout the year is an essential element for a healthy society.
Inspite of the earth comprising of water to the extend of 1400 million cubic kilometres only 1.3 million cubic kms of the water is considered fit for human consumption, said the SE who advocated economical and purposeful usage of water to check water crisis gripping most part of the planet Earth.
Among others district Level Water and Sanitation Committee, Imphal East Member Secretary Ksh Lalitbabu Singh also addressed the gathering.
