Imphal, February 15 2018:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister today urging him to take up proactive action to develop a full-fledged National Sports University in the State in terms of manpower requisition and infrastructure development on a time bound manner and stop the ongoing process of opening off-campuses of NSU Manipur in different States by utilising its own resources.
In the memorandum, DESAM stated that the people of Manipur specially the youth were overwhelmed when the BJP-led Government at the Centre made an announcement within 100 days of its formation that the State was considered for starting a world class sports university in the name of National Sports University (NSU) Manipur based on the overall performance of sportspersons of the State.
It stated that the Central Government has fulfilled the aspiration of the people by starting two courses under the university, namely degree courses in Physical Education and Sports Coaching from January 15 last with only 20 students selected from across the country.
Surprisingly, degree course in Physical Education was not figured in the original project report.
It was seemingly inserted later on to give a false impression of having various courses under the university.
The degree course is already available under Manipur University and the upcoming Dhanamanjuri University, it pointed out.
The memorandum mentioned that National Sports University Bill is yet to be cleared by the Parliament and four years degree course in Sports Coaching is also yet to be approved by the University Grant Commission.
The fate of the university and its students are presently questioned, it stated.
So far, one senior Professor from LNCP, Gwalior has been entrusted to look after the university as the Dean for three months and five Assistant Professors have been appointed on contract basis.
Till date no regular staff has been appointed for the university which is running for namesake without a Registrar, Controller of Examination and clerical staff.
The so called Vice-Chancellor of the university is sitting at National Anti-Doping Agency office at New Delhi, the memorandum contended.
