Imphal, January 03 2016:
A one-day awareness programme on bushfire in Langol reserved forest area and its preventive measures was held today at Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai community hall under the aegis of the Range Forest Officer, Sadar West Range.
Speaking at the gathering, Conservator of Forest (Central Circle) Th Mahendra-paratap said that the awareness programme was aimed at creating mass awareness on the negative impacts of igniting bushfire in Langol reserved forest area.
Igniting bushfires deliberately destroyed vast forest areas in addition to seriously degrading soil fertility.
Bushfires affect environment and ecology and they can also lead to artificial floods, Mahendrapratap said.
Appealing to all the people to take pro-active roles in preserving forest and stop making bushfires, he further called upon the gathering not to encroach upon forest areas and cut down trees.
Informing that joint forest management committees have been constituted to protect forests, he said that 50 per cent of the revenue collected from forest
resources would be accrued to the Government exchequer and 30 per cent would go the committees while the remaining 20 per cent would be added to village development funds.
Central Circle Divisional Forest Officer L Joykumar also participated in the awareness programme.
