Imphal, January 10 2011:
The United Naga Council (UNC), Manipur is understood to have instructed Naga MLAs and members of Autonomous District Councils of four Naga dominated hill district to resign from their posts by January 31 .
A highly reliable source said that the United Naga Council (UNC), Manipur on Saturday set the deadline while reaffirming the Naga peoples' convention declaration of July 1, 2010 .
The July 1 convention had adopted a resolution to seek an alternative arrangement for the Nagas in Manipur.
The UNC resolved to boycott Naga MLAs and ADC members in case they do not resign from their respective members on or before January 31, 2011 .
Manipur police has reviewed the security escort provided to Naga MLAs and ADC members so as to thwart any untoward incidents to them.
It is pertinent to mention that six independent MLAs from four hills districts submitted their resignations to the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly on May 5, 2010 in the wake of Manipur government's barring the entry of NSCN-IM leader Th Muivah to Manipur and in protest against the May 3 Mao gate incident that killed three youths.
The six MLAs from Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong and Chandel districts, Dr Kashim Ruivah, Morung Mokunga, Awangbou Newmai, K Raina, Danny Shaiza and Wungnaoshung Keishing had submitted their resignation papers to the then Speaker, Dr Sapam Budhichandra.
MLAs from these four hill districts have been under pressure to tender resignations by various hill based civil organisations opposing elections to the Manipur (Hills) District Council under the existing amendment act, the Manipur (Hills) District Council (Third Amendment) Act 2008 .
