Anguished by the worsening condition of Imphal-Jiribam highway which has become unfit for loaded heavy vehicles at different sections, drivers and transporters operating along the highway have launched a cease work strike from today.
Out of around 400 loaded heavy vehicles which were heading towards Imphal from Jiribam together with security escorts on September 28, around 200 vehicles are still stranded as the highway has dilapidated to the extreme on for a length of 5/ 6 Kms and the highway looks like a big drain at Nungkao area.
Speaking to media persons today.
Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC) H Ranjit said that the highway is impassable on either side of Makru bridge and also at Nungkao area.
Many heavy vehicles are still stack at Rather than using normal ordinary stones for repairing the dilapidated portions, the BRO used spiky rocks and stones which caused bursting of tyres and even breakage of gear boxes.
Ranjit said.
Subsequently, drivers and transporters who are plying along the highway decided to stay off the highway - Chief Minister and the Works Minister to either instruct BRO to repair the road or take up the matter with the Government of India within the next two/three days .
In case Imphal-Jiribam highway is not repaired at the earliest, TDC would be compelled to prohibit unloading of goods brought along Imphal-Dimapur highway, Ranjit said.
On the other than the Social Welfare Forum, Barak to Phaitol has decided to stop all kinds of vehicles from plying across all the 19 bridges along the route from October 5 due to the non-payment of bridge compensation on NH-37 .
If the authority concerned fails to release the compensation which is being paid by the 765 BRTF to the bank accounts of DC/LA, Tamenglong district, the proposed bandh will be imposed till the said compensation is released to all the respective affected villages, it said in a statement.
