Referring to non-compliance of State Government to a Manipur Human Rights Commission directive to file a report regarding displacement of Hmar community of tipaimukh sub-division the Human Rights Alert has questioned wisdom of constituting the inquiry commission.
With the MHRC intimation to the Chief Secretary (Feb 16) failing to evoke the desired response pertaining to information on steps taken by the Government in connection with the issue the Commission has issued another directive to the Chief Secretary for furnish the report within April 28, conveyed HRA in a statement.
The HRA along with Hmar Students' Association and Rongmei Lu Pham had on February 10 petitioned the MHRC for institution of a fact finding inquiry through spot visit and to recommend appropriate measures on rehabilitation and resorting livelihood of the villagers, recalled the statement.
Contending that the petition had consequently resulted in formation of the probe body under Justice (retd) Sp Rajkhowa, HRA nevertheless expressed awe on lack of cooperation from State authorities by their non-adherence to the MHRC missive for furnishing details of the fact finding process.
HRA also questioned logic of instituting the inquiry commission when the matter has been intimated to the court of MHRC headed by a person no less than a retired chief justice of High Court and drawing substantial amount annually from the State exchequer.
