Personnel of Imphal West District Police Commando unit have apprehended two cadres of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party said to be involved in extorting money from the trucks plying along the National Highway 39 from near ABC godown at Khoyathong around 3.30 pm today.
According to police sources, the two arrested KCP cadres are identified as Arubam Bikram alias Ingba Meitei (24) s/o Mani of Nungsung Maning Leikai and Naorem Kumarjit Singh (40) s/o Tombi Singh of Khongman Mayai Leikai.
Bikram is said to be sergeant major who is in charge of the town commander of Imphal East of the outfit while Kumarjit is the second in command.
The commandos have recovered one 9 mm pistol, a magazine along with five live rounds besides RC books of seven trucks and three padlocks from the arrested duo.
On getting specific information that some underground activists are exhorting money from the truck drivers plying along the National Highway 39, a team of police commandos of Imphal East District led by Officer in charge Krishnatombi was pressed into action and spread out the net to trap them, the police source said.
The two KCP activists were arrested after overpowering them while they were trying to extort money from the truck drivers at gun-point at Khoyathong today, the police source informed.
