Imphal, March 25 2012:
In the backdrop of acute shortage of water due to prevailing dry spell, a one-day consultation programme on 'Crisis of Potable Water in Manipur: Is there a Way Out,' was organised by Human Rights Law Network at the Keishampat Junction conference hall of EEMA today.
The mostly-women deliberation witnessed many speakers highlighting rapid ecological imbalance and dissipation of natural water bodies in Manipur consequently resulting in acute shortage of water in a yearly cycle.
Compared to the past few decades during which private and locality ponds were aplenty, construction of houses by filling these ponds has been diminishing the source of water for everyday use, opined many of the speakers who also expressed that compared to the men the womenfolk suffer the most for they look after many household chores.
Asserting that ensuring easy access to water is the right of every citizen, they asked the Government of Manipur for pro-active measures to ameliorate problem of water scarcity.
Advocate Kh Mani, the event host director Meihoubam Rakesh, former Manipur Human Rights Commission member Yambem Laba and Gauhati High Court advocate K Rabei also addressed the gathering.
