Imphal, November 08, 2013:
People for Animal, Thoubal has taken two rescued migratory birds in their custody.
A press release issued by the animal rights group said that PFA Thoubal was informed by one Mainam Juge Meitei of Thoubal Awang Leikai to collect a bird on Wednesday.
As part of the 2nd Greet Our Guest campaign, volunteers of PFA Thoubal rushed to Juge's house and took one Eurasian coot or common coot (Fulica atra) into their custody.
According to its migratory schedule and track, it is believed that the bird might arrive Manipur travelling southward.
It would return back in late February, the press release added.
Juge along with his family members rescued the bird from dogs using fishing nets.
Ecologically, coots play important role in food chain system by helping to maintain the population of prey species and aquatic vegetation, added the press release.
In another occasion, PFA Thoubal received information of rescuing a big bird at Charangpat on Thursday.
PFA Thoubal volunteers immediately rushed to the spot and found a crested serpent eagle (Spilornis cheela).
The wing of the magnificent bird measures about 5 feet.
Whenever it faces danger or gets excited, the black and white crest on its head naturally rises up giving imposing and ferocious looks.
The bird suffered some injuries on its beak and tongue, the press release said and added that the bird was rescued by one Thiyam Sanatomba, founder of Career Resident Academy, Charangpat.
He told PFA that the eagle was seen chased by crows and it came flying inside his residential complex.
The species mostly hunt snakes.
Birds of prey like eagle, hawk, kite or owl are at the top of the food chain system.
If they can survive and remain healthy, it indicates that the area is healthy for living.
The crested serpent eagle is found in most parts of south and southeast Asia and in large parts of China.
Both are listed in schedule IV of WLP Acts.
The birds would be released tomorrow, added the press release.
