Imphal, September 29 2010:
Garbage bins are set to be put up along the market shed of Nagamapal road stretch on trial basis before installation of the same in the three market sheds of Khwairamband Bazar.
Talking to The Sangai Express in this regard, Director of MAHUD N Gitkumar said that garbage bins would be started putting up along the Nagamapal market shed on trial basis from tomorrow.
He informed that the step has been taken up as the Zero Garbage Campaign of IMC, MAHUD and PDA have been completed in Nagamapal areas where 15 days have been launched in residential area and another 15 days in commercial areas.
The campaign in the three market sheds of Khwairamband Market is due to begin from mid October.
After the campaign, similar garbage bins would also be installed in the three Khwairamband Market sheds.
He disclosed that a meeting with the women vendors of Nagamapal market shed has been convened at 8 am tomorrow to decide how many garbage bins should be put up and who would use them.
He, however, pointed out that garbage bins are required for proper management of the garbages whether it be in commercial area or residential area.
The Zero Garbage Campaign is being launched from August 11 to October 31 to spread public awareness on proper disposal and management of garbages.
The campaign covers 7 Assembly segments of Imphal Municipality area namely Thangmeiband, Uripok, Sagolband, Yaiskul, Singjamei, Wangkhei and Keishamthong Constituencies.
However, the campaign is yet to begin in the three Khwairamband Bazar market sheds.
In this regard, president of Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup, Khwairamband Bazar Laishram Memma pointed out that as there are no dust bins in the three market sheds, the women vendors have been having no alternative but to pile up the garbages along the road despite knowing well that it is not proper.
So, they themselves have made some arrangement for disposal of the garbages in dustbins.
Nonetheless, it would have been better if the Zero Garbage Campaign had been launched in Khwairamband Bazar first in recognition of the fact it the biggest commercial area in the State.
On the other hand, Gitkumar has explained that Zero Garbage Campaign in Khwairamband Bazar can be taken up only after proper awareness of the people in the surrounding areas.
Disposal and management of garbage inside the market sheds would require special arrangement, he added.
