First community college opened in CCpur

Lamka, June 12 2014: The State's first community college was inaugurated today at Churachandpur College here with the objective of utilizing local talents to nurture educated unemployed and underprivileged sections of the society on locally accessible jobs.

The community college, one of the two institutes to be established in the State under Education Department is said to be funded by the UGC.

The second such college will be inaugurated tomorrow at DM College of Science in Imphal.

Following the formal launching of the college, two trades � Computer Technology and Automobile Technology will make its debut with a course period of 2 years each in partnership with Alama Information Technology and United Motors.

More trades would be introduced if the initiative is considered successful, said an official.

Though the Education Minister was invited to the inauguration function, he could attend the programme due to other crucial official engagements, said Tipaimukh MLA Chaltonlien Amo.

Speaking at the occasion as chief guest, the MLA assured to put forward the appeals of Professors from Churachandpur College as well as the students on posting more Professors for the college before the Minister concerned.

Maintaining that there is severe shortage of faculty members in the college, faculties and students said that it would not be possible to commence classes in the newly inaugurated college from fixed date of June 2 .

On the otherhand, the college has witnessed an overwhelming turn up of students, they added.

Parliamentary Secretary Vungzagin Valte said that he had studied in Churachandpur College in the 80s.He claimed that there were good number of faculty members at that time comparing to the present days.

He also assured to demand more teaching staff for the college to the concerned Department.

The Thanlon MLA also asked the faculty members of the college to get ready for launching of Post Graduate courses as he along with other officials have been pleading the authority of Manipur University to open a campus in the college.

Henglep MLA T Manga who also graced the function said the Congress Government should be hailed for establishing the community college.

HR&Tech Commissioner Paulunthang Vaiphei said that the focus of the community college is the disadvantaged and underprivileged and not well placed students and thus it has the potential to address the needs of the underprivileged students.

He made the argument based on his claims that often educated unemployed youths were driven by frustration and hence serves as the best ground from where many social ills are nurtured.

Classes for the newly inaugurated college are likely to commence between July to August this year.
