Imphal, February 09 2015:
While welcoming the State Cabinet's decision to introduce the Dhanamanjuri University Bill, 2014 again in the ensuing budget session of Manipur Legislative Assembly, All Manipur Government College Teachers' Association (AMGOCTA) has appealed to the authorities concerned not to abolish the Dhanamanjuri Colleges after the establishment of the proposed Dhanamanjuri University.
According to a statement of AMGOCTA, the Dhanamanjuri sister colleges have been in existence for more than 70 years as premier colleges in the State.
However, the proposed establishment of Dhanamanjuri University has created apprehension among the teachers' community about the possible abolition of these colleges.
There is no mention of the DM College of Science, DM College of Arts, DM College of Commerce, Hindi Teachers' Training College, GP Women's College and LMS Law College as constituent colleges in the Dhanamanjuri University Bill.
There is also a clear indication for the removal of undergraduate courses altogether in the structure of the proposed Dhanamanjuri University.
It further said that such act of Manipur Government is detrimental to the growth of higher education in the State.
It is a cherished dream of the people of Manipur to have an ideal state university, but there is no enlightened rationale in demolishing the legacy of a 70-year-old foundation of knowledge system of the State.
Moreover, the proposed bill is also found to be a complete departure from the provisions of RUSA.
Abolition of Dhanamanjuri sister colleges and three other colleges of the State in creating a state university is a serious threat to the higher education system of the State.
The State Government should not act against the wishes of the people in creating the State University.
Thousands of people are ready to protect and conserve the sanctity and freedom of DM Colleges of higher learning.
The association has also submitted a representation to State Education Minister in this regard, the statement added.
