Imphal, September 04, 2010:
Congress had enabled to win the faith of people of Manipur but it has failed to win the confidence of the people, Bharatiya Janata Partys Mahila Morcha chief Smriti Irani, who arrived here on a two day visit, said today.
Addressing the Mahila Workers Meet at the BJP state unit office, at Nityapat Chuthek, the actress turned politician who recently has taken over the charge of the womens wing of the party said that Manipuris who fought with the then mighty British empire had been reduced to the sideline by the Congress.
The BJP condemned the attitude of the Congress.
The BJP leader said that her party understood the plight of the people of the state.
This had been proved by the fact that the suffering of the people owing to multiple issues including the most sensitive issue of sky rocketing prices of essential commodities owing to the prolonged economic blockade was tabled on the floor of both Houses of the Parliament recently, she claimed.
I am coming here with the instruction from the party leaders in New Delhi to visit Manipur and take stock of the ground situation.
I will submit report on the account after returning to the capital (New Delhi), said Irani adding that the other objective of her visit in the state was to strengthen the state unit Mahila Morcha.
Irani also assured that she will extend all co-operation in strengthening the state unit women wing of the party to ensure that the voice of the women of the state could be raised up in the national level.
With regard to the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special) Power Act, 1958 which many sections of the society are demanding, she said the party supports the demand and also supports the struggle of Irom Sharmila who has been fasting for the last 10 years on the same demand.
As chief of the Women Wing of the party, Irani said, she had a plan to take up self help groups for women in the state and put them upto the national level by paving the way to take part in the national fairs to get marketing facilities of the products they produced with the self help group.
Earlier on her arrival at the Imphal Airport, the BJP Womens Wing chief said Action taken report of the government placed in Parliament was not upto the expectation of the people of the region, particularly Manipur where people are suffering by prolonged economic blockade on the National Highways, Smirti Irani said.
Government is taking up works only on the paper and not physically.
While they had said that they are trying their best to get people relief from artificial scarcity of foods and other essential items like the petroleum products facing by the people here in Manipur, nothing was seen taken up.
Irani said that she knew people of the state are suffering a lot due to the economic blockade which is still continuing and the most suffering section of the society is the women group.
During her stay in the state, she will assess the problems facing by the women of the state.
Chandrasekhar Rao, the zonal organizational secretary (NE) had already arrived in Imphal yesterday to attend the conference slated at the BJP, Manipur Pradesh Unit office speaking at the workers meet observed that Northeastern region of India is like a mini India.
It will not be a right one to work in the interest of a section of the society.
President of the state unit BJP, Sh Shantikumar who also address the meet observed the awfully state of situation of the State where people are living chaotic situation.
Citing that when BJP raised the Manipur issue in the House of Parliament, Congress MP from Manipur, Dr T Meinya interrupted without any reason.
Apart from this, even though Jeevan Reddy Commission had recommended repeal of the AFSPA long back, the Centre is still remaining silent.
When ruling Congress is so much neglected the state, it is time to teach lesion to the party.
This should be done at the time of election, he said.
