Imphal, March 15:
North East Students' Organisation (NESO) has taken serious note of not supplying free text books under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan scheme to students below the age of 14 years even though the academic session has already been started.
The scheme of supply free text books covered under various Centrally sponsored schemes, specially the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is targeted for universalisation of education in India.
But is has been learnt that many States of the North East is yet to execute the same, NESO general secretary NSN Lotha noted in a statement.
He further observed that the scheme is a noble venture meant for bringing in equality of education as embodied in the Directive Principle of State Policy of the Indian Constitution.
So it is absolutely obligatory for every State of North East to ensure that the said programme is appropriately implemented in all right earnest so as to bring about the concept of welfare State to its maximum success.
Recalling that in June 2003, All Assam Students' Union (AASU), acting on the complaints of delay in issuing free text books raided the godown of the Education Department of Assam and found that more then four thousands of parcels, containing school text books, the NESO statement said that although disciplinary action was initiated against the erring officials, yet one must understand the academic loss of the students is unrecoverable.
Therefore, this incident of Assam should be an exemplary for all the other State of North East, NESO said.
Appealing to the respective States of NE to immediately send the text books to the schools on or before the end of March, NESO warned that if any State is found to not have complied with this request, it would be compelled to press for disciplinary action to the Central Government.
