Imphal, February 11:
Strongly condemning Meitei Mayek activists for burning Bengali script text books yesterday, National Students Union of India, Manipur unit demanded that such activists should be arrested and dealt according to law.
Expressing that NSUI honors dialect and script of all nationality and had been extending unstinted support to the cause of developing and popularizing Meitei Mayek, the student body desired the script activists to accord respect to other languages and scripts.
Contending that snatching of school text books written in Bengali script from young students had created fear psychosis and compounded the burden of the parents/guardians the student body pointed out that any group or individual found harassing the innocent children require fitting lesson.
When the entire state is besieged by difficulties situation due to non-availability of text books burning them in pursuit of specific agenda tantamount to undermining the interest and concern of the public, observed the student body and added such conduct is far from democratic form of movement.
It also questioned whether the Mayek activists can target newspapers, favored novels and informative publications which are all written in Bengali script and what right has the Meitei Mayek movement activists to embark on destructive manner.
