Imphal, April 03:
Peeved over delay in completing road construction works near Manipur College in Singjamei Chingamakha infuriated locals blocked the road in addition to staging protest demonstration in the area.
According to one Y Sharat, informed to be president of Model Club, road construction work had begun with the laying of WBM that too shabbily, in the latter half of March with no further sign of continuity till date.
While the protest demonstration is informed to have be staged since yesterday at the nearby market shed, partial road blockade movement had already started three days back.
Taking into account that the WBM work had commenced at the fag end of the financial year (March), locals doubted the haste in which the work had been initiated by the contractor concerned might be with an eye of withdrawing fund allocation of the current financial provision.
Further questioning quality of the work, they contended that due to dust and loose boulders/chips causing great inconveniences to the local residents and shop-keepers on the route the people are constraint to adopt agitational steps to highlight their problem and angst.
desiring that officials concerned of the PWD assess the situation and take immediate steps to resume the works, representatives of local organisations also threatened to persist with similar but more vigorous agitation.
The agitation would, however, exempt movement of students, teachers and staff of Manipur College, they informed while cautioning that there would be no leniency against all others who defy the agitation call.
On the other hand, the agitators quoting PWD officials conveyed that neither could identity of the contractor concerned could be confirmed nor had the Department issued tender for the same work.
