NIA launches probe into Wungnaoshang ambush

Along with registering a case against the NSCN (IM), Na-tional Investigation Agency (NIA) has started inves-tigating the incident of ambush laid on MLA of Phun-gyar Assembly Constituency Wungnaoshang Keish-ing that left eight escort personnel dead and seven others injured.
The investigating agen-cy is also likely to take up case against the Naga rebel group over the recent San-gakpham bomb blast that claimed the lives of five persons including two young students and caused injuries to eight others.
According to an infor-med source, at the instruction of the Central Government, NIA registered a case against NSCN (IM) and started investigation into the ambush on MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing on April 15 last near Riha village in Ukhrul district.
The Union Home Ministry has also submitted the names of the NSCN (IM) cadres who were involved in the ambush to the State Government some days back, the source disclosed.
On the other hand, NIA is also likely to take up another case in connection with the bomb blast at San-gakpham Bazar on August 1 .
The approval of the Centre is awaited in this regard, the source informed.
Meanwhile, NIA recently submitted a chargesheet against four KYKL cadres who are presently in its custody to a Darjeeling court.
Consequently, trial against the KYKL cadres, namely Chirom Robert alias Ranjit, Kongkham Tomba, Asem Naoba alias Prakash and Leishemba would begin very soon, it said.
At the instruction of NIA, Imphal East district police have also recovered a vehicle, which was used by Asem Nanao alias Prakash while in Gangtok, Sikkim but brought to Imphal and used here under a new registration plate, and handed over the same to the investigating agency, the source disclosed.
Based on its activities, the NIA has also taken up a case against the proscribed People's Liberation Army (PLA), the source added.
