Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, a government telecommunication service which is the widest communication channel in the state with sophisticated technology has suffered a set back in rendering service to its customers due to inadequate power supply, sources here said.
Talking to this reporter, Additional General Manager BSNL (Manipur), J Lunkim said that lack of power supply is the main problem encountered by BSNL in rendering services to its customers of the state.
Lack of adequate power supply in almost all mobile towers of BSNL has led to its malfunctioning.
The towers are run by generators where cost factor is very high.
As such the towers cannot be run 24 hours a day.
He further said that there are about 2 lakh BSNL customers in the state.
To fulfill the demands of their customers BSNL has installed 120 towers in the state out of which 40% are located in Imphal area.
Most complaints come from hill districts mainly from Churchandpur, Ukhrul, Chandel and Tamenglong where there is less power supply and also of poor technical equipments.
He appealed to the government to supply enough power regularly.
Recently about three months back BSNL launched the first phase of its wireless broad band tower known as "WIMAX" in the state which has high speed internet access and data communication.
The speed is much higher than 3G.It can be better termed as 4G.The speed rate is 2mbps and has area coverage of 15 km radius range from the tower.
This facility is now available in Sawombung, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi and Churchandpur, he said.
He further went on to say that for proper functioning and development of BSNL services in the state, BSNL, as a second phase, is planning to install another 22 towers by the end of this year which will cover all the districts of the state.
J Lunkim further appealed to the general public to check the robbery of cable wires which is also one of the major reasons for the poor functioning of BSNL.
