Hockey wizard Dhyan Chand commemorated on National Sports Day

National Sports Day was celebrated widely in Manipur as celebrated across India.
The day commemorates the three time Olympic champion Major Dhyan Chand who is also known as India's Hockey Wizard, on his birth anniversary since 2012.The finest hockey athlete India has ever had, won Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936 .
The Department of Physical Education and Sports Science, Manipur University also observed the day at Dr Kamal Indoor Stadium from yesterday with an inter house (6 houses- Paona, Bir Tikendrajit, Irawat, Thangal, Jadonang and Rani Gaidinliu) badminton competition.

The programme held in honour of the hockey legend was organised on the theme "Sports as an Enabler for an Inclusive and Fit Society", said a statement issued by HOD Phy Edn and Sports Science, MU.
Today's observance programme was attended by Vice Chancellor MU, Prof N Lokendra Singh as the chief guest; Dr L Thambal, HOD Department of Physical Education and Sports Science MU as functional president and Prof Nahakpam Aruna Devi, Dean School of Humanities, MU; Prof Irom Gambhir Singh, president, MU Teachers Association and Chinglensana Singh Kangujam, Arjuna Awardee and Hockey Olympian (2016) as guests of honour, it said.
The day also saw badminton matches between the VC team and MU Teachers' Association team and between PhD Research Scholars and Masters Students of Physical Education Department, it said.
After the competitions, MU VC presented "Major Dhyan Chand Trophy" to competition winners, Paona House, it continued.
NSU
National Sports University also celebrated the day with a series of competition and activities from August 25 before concluding today with a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand.
Waikhom Mani Girls' College
Our Thoubal Correspondent reported that the day was observed at Waikhom Mani Girls College with the Principal of the college- Prof H Manoranjan Sharma leading in paying floral tribute to the photo of the late athlete.
A basketball exhibition match for students and fun games for teachers were held as a part of the celebration, our Correspondent added.
STC BSF CCpur
STC BSF Churachandpur also celebrated National Sports Day at the STC campus under the theme "Sports as an enabler for an inclusive and fit society" .
A statement issued by the Churachandpur centre said that team based sports competitions were held since August 21 and culminated today.
All STC officers, employees, trainees and families participated in the games, it said.
E Coy emerged champions in the volleyball and hockey (penalty shoot-out) competitions as B Coy won the tug of war competition.
E Coy were also declared overall winners of the games and feted with Maj Dhyan Chand Trophy during the valedictory function graced by Abhishek Pathak, IG, STC Churachandpur, it added.
