Imphal, August 29 2023:
Following an unprecedented move by the government to end the state assembly session in just nine minutes on Tuesday, Meira Paibi organisations of different localities have demanded the government to reconvene another session while terming the Tuesday's sitting as a mockery to the people of Manipur.
Condemning in the strongest term the way the session was convened, Meira Paibis of Kongpal Sajor Leikai, Chingangbam Leikai, Ningthoubung Leikai, Laishram Leikai along with Khunngak Lup Khurai organised an impromptu protest at Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai during which Kongpal Sajor Leikai Meira Paibi Lup president Sougrakpam Leirangtombi demanded the government to reconvene another session at the earliest.
She said that the nine-minute assembly session is a mockery and challenge to the people of the state, especially the displaced people, who have been unable to return to their homes and those who gave their lives to protect the territory of Manipur.
She also warned of launching different forms of agitation unless the government reconvenes another session.
Another Meira Paibi leader RK Memton demanded the government to place in the public domain road map for resolving the crisis and restore peace and normalcy.
She asked the MLAs to play their part in upholding the territory of the state and also strongly condemned the Assam Rifles for issuing legal notice against Thounaojam Maheshwar, who is only trying to bringing out the truth behind the Manipur crisis to the whole nation, and demanded the government to remove Assam Rifles from the state.
Members of Porompat Tha-wanthaba Leikai Women's Association also organised a protest at Lainingthou Thawanthaba Haraobung community hall denouncing the nine-minute assembly session.
The protestors described the Tuesday's session as anti-people conduct on the part of the government.
Meanwhile, maintaining that the 10-minute assembly session was convened only to save the MLAs and ministers of Manipur, Committee on Peaceful Coexistence (CPC) said that the session was a mockery to the people and will remain as a dark spot in the history of Manipur.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club here on Tuesday, CPC convenor Sajid Bhuiyamayum said that much against the expectation of the public, the assembly session turned out to be an attempt to save the MLAs and ministers.
It has clearly indicated that the government of India despite its federal structure is remote-controlling smaller states and preventing them (small states) from exercising their democratic powers.
While expressing resentment over rumours being spread in the state that some of Meitei Pangal (Manipuri Muslims) are resorting to kidnapping and abduction of children and creating chaos and nuisance, Sajid said that even though we shout of unity, the very essence of unity has been destroyed and there is fear that unity in diversity in Manipur is going to be destroyed.
He also appealed to the meira paibi groups to prevent such rumours from spreading further while also urging the media fraternity to verify reports before publishing.
Sajid also mentioned that various memorandums have been submitted to the central leaders demanding solution to unrest situation in Manipur at the earliest.
However, since no measures have been taken up, the trust of the people in the central government has vanished.
