Imphal, August 29 2023:
Infuriated over the failure to discuss the prevailing situation in Manipur during the one-day session of the State Assembly, the Khurai Heigrumakhong Apunba Nupi Lup (KHANL) has asked Chief Minister N Biren Singh, the leader of the House, to step down.
Notably, womenfolk of KHANL have been on relay hunger strike since August 27 with a demand that all the civil society organisations (CSOs) unite and take a resolution to break the cycle of violence in Manipur during the one-day Assembly session at Khurai Heigrumakhong.
Speaking to media persons today, secretary of KHANL Waribam Nandarani claimed that the Chief Minister has proven his incompetency by the way in which the Assembly session was adjourned today without holding any discussion on the key issue besieging the State for nearly the last four months.
Asking the Chief Minister to resign immediately without 'staging any drama' like he did allegedly on June 30 where his resignation letter was torn by a group of women, Nandarani said that the people won't complain if the post of the Chief Minister is given to any Meitei legislator other than N Biren.
Laitonjam ongbi Ashalata, publicity secretary of the Nupi Lup, said that the Assembly session convened today has miserably failed to deliver the aspiration of the people and as such the Chief Minister must resign immediately since he is the leader of the House.
People expected that the one-day Assembly session would take some resolutions to end the violence, she added.
Saying that President's Rule can be imposed in Manipur if there is no Meitei MLA who can take the Chief Ministerial post as a replacement of N Biren, Ashalata maintained that the Centre may impose President's Rule if it could end the onslaught of Kukis and control the violence in Manipur.
