Moirang, August 29 2023:
Locals of Kumbi stormed the Phougakchao Ikhai police station and destroyed a Gypsy and a Tata DI of the station due to certain misunderstanding late last night.
The locals claimed that the police didn't assist the village volunteers and VDF personnel in pushing back the Kuki militants who attacked Phougakchao Ikhai Mamang Leikai from Torbung side which is heavily guarded by Central security forces last night at around 8.45 .
The protesters also demanded withdrawal of the Kumaon Regiment check-post set up ahead of the police check-post near Phougakchao Ikhai Bazar along Tiddim Road.
The police, however, clarified that two teams of State police rushed towards Torbung on hearing gunshot sounds but they were stopped by Central forces by parking their casper vehicle in the middle of the road at Phougakchao Ikhai Makha leikai Bazar which the Kukis call Kangvai.
Saying that the police had a heated confrontation with the Central forces for causing obstruction in discharging their duty, the police said that they returned to their station as they couldn't move ahead.
Shortly after the police returned to their station, the locals stormed the police station and vandalised the vehicles, it added.
It is reported that the personnel of Kumaon Regiment stationed near Phougakchao Ikhai Bazar areas also detained and didn't allow the media persons to head towards the police station even after showing their identity cards.
The Central forces built barricades and bunkers near Phougakchao Ikhai Bazar to prevent entry of people.
It is said that the Central security forces didn't allow the media persons to even take photos and video footage of the areas.
Later, the Commanding Officer of Kumaon Regiment came to the area and told the media persons to not publish any unfounded news before allowing them (the media persons) to head to the police station.
