Imphal, December 17 2010:
A truck driver and his helper who were abducted by unidentified armed persons from along National Highway 39 at Taphou in Senapati district have been set free.
Loaded with eatable items, the Imphal bound truck (NL-01G/4439) was coming from Dimapur when its driver S William Thangal (37) of Tumnoupokpi and his helper Nikhil Das were abducted by suspected armed cadres of a Kuki UG group yesterday morning, said sources.
Not long after they were freed by the abductors, troops of 43 Assam Rifles came across them and later handed them over to the Kangpokpi police.A case has been registered.
It is suspected that the abduction may be related to extortion demand.
