Suspected Swine Flu hits Ukhrul

An unknown disease suspected to be Swine Flu has hit hard Ukhrul villages killing at least 20 pigs and infecting many at Hamleikhong D Block and Phungcham village.
The infected animals show symptoms of fever, constipation, weakness and loss of appetite and later starving to death.
Yaoreingam Longleng from Phungcham village said that a 10 month old pig weighing 80 Kg died on July 22 and was immediately buried to prevent spread of the disease.
The outbreak of suspected Swine Flu in Phungcham village has caused damage worth lakh of rupees.
According to Longleng, many pigs, chickens, dogs and even buffaloes in the village have been infected with the flu.
Taking up precautionary measures, the villagers have started vaccinating animals with vaccines that are available in Ukhrul town market without consulting the veterinary doctors.
The infected pigs are being treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications, said Junme Longleng of Phungcham.
Meanwhile, convener of Hamleikhong D Block Ukhrul town has informed that the Joint Director, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Ukhrul has been informed about the situation in the locality.
