Sit-in staged against liquor legalisation

Imphal, May 02 2023:
Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) along with different women's groups (Ima Lup) continue to stage sit-in protest against the cabinet decision to legalise liquor in the state.
In a release, CADA information & publicity secretary L Brojen Angomcha informed that All Manipur Women's Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Women's Welfare Association, Naharup Awang Leikai and CADA jointly staged sit-in protest at Naharup Awang Leikai on Tuesday.
A similar protest was also staged at Awang Jiri Maning Leikai and Pangaltabi Chingkha on Monday.
The protestors held placards inscribed with slogans like 'Will not accept liquor legalisation', 'How will liquor be restricted through legalisation when it could not be controlled even when there was prohibition?', 'Will a good quality liquor not deteriorate health?', 'Will crime be reduced by consuming quality liquor?', 'What is a good quality liquor?', 'Is the legalisation of liquor amidst war on drugs akin to restriction on drug abuse and not alcoholism' and 'Isn't there any other way to increase revenue than from liquor' among others.
They also shouted slogans demanding revocation of the cabinet decision to legalise liquor and saving Manipur from alcoholism, the release conveyed.
