The bodies of two Kukis have remained unclaimed at District Hospital Churachandpur mortuary for months despite being identified by their family members.
Notably, the body of Ngamgoumang Haokip (27), s/o Ngamkhojang Haokip of Chejang village, PO/PS Chakpikarong, Chandel district has been languishing at District Hospital Churachandpur mortuary since June 6, 2023 after the completion of a post mortem examination.
Ngamgoumang Haokip's mortal remains were identified by his uncle Lethang s/o (L) Jamkhotil of MB Saichang village, Sangaikot, Churachandpur.
Meanwhile, the other deceased individual, Thangminlun Haokip (26) s/o Ngamkholet Haokip, Chief of Phaisi village, Chandel district was identified by his elder brother Hollal Haokip (40), s/o Ngamkholet Haokip of Phaisi village, Chandel and presently staying at M Songgel village, Churachandpur.
His dead body has been lying unclaimed at the morgue since July 29, 2023 .
FIRs were registered at Sugnu police station in connection with the two cases.
According to statements issued by Ng Anthony Suresh, MPS, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Sugnu, Kakching district, the unclaimed bodies are causing a health hazard to the hospital staff and the public.
The SDPO also pointed out that the Supreme Court of India has instructed authorities to dispose of unclaimed dead bodies within a week.
