42nd Archives Week Celebration / Record Exhibition begins

The Manipur State Archives, Department of Art & Culture, Government of Manipur has kicked off the 42nd Archives Week Celebration cum Record Exhibition today at its complex in Keishampat, Imphal.
Chief guest of the event, Wangkhei AC MLA Thangjam Arunkumar inaugurated the 7-days long exhibition on 'Records & Manuscripts' and released a tour diaries titled, 'Mr AW Davis, ESQ ICS & Mr Porteous 1893,1894,1895 & 1896 political officers, North Lushai Hills' .
Private custodians were also felicitated during the event.

Delivering the keynote address, Manipur State Archives Deputy Director, Y Yaima Devi said International Archives Week is celebrated every year from June 5-9 to promote the importance of good record keeping practices and allows members of the public access to archival buildings for them to witness archival functions and services.
"However, the Archives Week celebration was delayed for the State due to prevailing law & order situation", she added.
She shared that the main aim of the celebration is to raise awareness about the importance of records & archives, and the unique, extraordinary and rare documents preserved in archival institutions.
The Deputy Director continued that the documents preserved in the Archives are classified into two groups- primary source & secondary source.
"Most of the primary source documents have been digitised.
Among private custodians, 30% of RK Sanahal's documents have been digitised.
More than 1,700 public reports collected from the Secretariat have also been digitised", she added.
Thangjam Arunkumar expressed his happiness in seeing the invaluable & rare literary works/ documents preserved in the Gallery of Manipur State Archive.
"Archives play a crucial role in society by preserving our collective memory, documenting our history, and providing a foundation for research and scholarship.
These specialized repositories safeguard records, documents, photographs, artifacts, and other historical, cultural, and societal materials", said the MLA.
Art & Culture Commission M Joy and former Director Art & Culture Dr K Sushila also attended the event as presidium members.
