Imphal, December 06 2023:
A 35-year-old housewife was found dead hanging from the ceiling fan of her bedroom at Khongman Mangjil Zone-II on Tuesday night as the police arrested the husband for questioning and locals of the victim's maternal home at Kanto Sabal, Leimakhong road staged sit in protest and formed a JAC to pursue justice for the victim.
The victim, Shijagurumayum ongbi Roni alias Nanao alias Romita was married to Sh Bidyananda alias Bubu of Khongman Mangjil Zone-II.
She was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her bedroom on Tuesday night and rushed to JNIMS where doctors could not save her.
Meanwhile, family members of the woman alleged that she might have died due to excessive torture by her husband.
They filed a complaint against the husband at Irilbung police station, where a case has been registered, and police have arrested Bidyananda for questioning on Tuesday itself.
He was produced before the duty magistrate of Imphal East on Wednesday and remanded to police custody for 10 days.
The body is in JNIMS mortuary, awaiting post mortem examination.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club here on Wednesday, the victim's mother Langpoklakpam Jamuna contended that her daughter Roni was often tortured by her husband while alive.
They had one daughter and one son.
Both families had talked over the matter, in the past, and the in-laws assured of preventing such torture.
However, Bidyananda continued the torture unabated, to which her daughter often called her to take her from there.
Jamuna said that on Tuesday around 6 pm, Roni called her on the phone and asked to come to pick her up saying that she escaped from home and was in Singjamei.
She then called Bidyananda to enquire about any issue, to which Bidyananda told her that he is buying vegetables at Khongman and everything was fine.
She asked both her daughter and son-in-law to call her after they were together.
Later, she tried calling them both but none of them picked up the phone.
After repeated attempts to contact, they came out to go to her daughter's home.
On the way, she dialled her daughter's number which was picked up by her (Roni) daughter, who told her that Roni was found hanging inside the bedroom and was rushed to JNIMS.
Upon reaching the hospital, they were told that she had died, Jamuna said.
The victim's mother further told media persons that there were several bruises on her daughter's body including hands and her head was also swelling as if she was hit by a blunt object.
Considering the circumstances and injury marks on her body, Jamuna said that it could not be a suicide and she suspects her son-in law is responsible for the death of her daughter.
They requested to witness the post mortem procedure but police rejected their request.
As a result, they objected to conduct of post mortem until a person from the victim's maternal family's side is made part of the procedure.
Consequently, the post mortem examination was deferred, she said and added that they will not claim the body until their demand is met.
Local residents of Kanto Sabal organised a sit-in protest against the incident, and a JAC was formed to pursue justice for Roni.
Bachaspatimayum Ibomcha has been appointed as convenor of the JAC .
