Imphal, June 10 2024:
Contending that there is no other way other than engaging in political dialogue to resolve the prevailing conflict in the state and come up with an amicable solution, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary L Sotinkumar has urged the chief minister to visit Jiribam and help restore peace in the district.
In a press meet held at CPI's office, Irawat Bhawan, here, on Monday, Sotinkumar said that the CM Biren-led government failed to control the outbreak of violence on May 3 last year and subsequently, led to displacement of Meeteis from Churachandpur, Moreh and Kangpokpi.
Over 2000 houses were burned and around 60,000 people displaced in the violence.
However, both the central and state governments failed to control the situation for more than a year now, forcing people to become discontented.
So far, PM Narendra Modi has barely paid any attention to Manipur's situation.
This compelled the people to teach the BJP government a lesson in the just concluded 18th Lok Sabha election, claimed Sotinkumar.
He continued that the people had raised alarms over the violence spreading to Jiribam.
However, the state government did not make any security arrangements leading to the escalating violence torching of around 72 Meetei houses, 65 alone in Borobekra.
This is a huge blunder on the part of the government, he remarked and urged the chief minister to go to Jiribam and help restore peace in the district, apart from ensuring resettlement of the displaced people in their original homes with adequate security.
Informing that a team of the Union would soon leave for the nation's capital and stage protests in front of the Par liament, in addition to meeting the prime minister and the union home minister for solving the crisis at the earliest; Sotinkumar said that if their demands were not addressed, then a 'Jail Bharo' protest will be launched, for which enrolment of volunteers is currently underway.
