Trace Nabachandra demand raised

Imphal, February 20 2015 : Locals under the aegis of Soibam Leikai Awang Meira Paibi Chaokhat Thourang Lup today staged a sit in protest at Meira Sanglen seeking the immediate intervention of the State Government in tracing the whereabouts of Keithellakpam Nabachadra who was reportedly arrested by a team of Indian intelligence sleuths and Bangladesh police from his residence under Mohammadpur police station, Dhaka on February 11 at around 10 pm.

Speaking to media persons, one of the demonstrators said that they learnt that the man is missing through newspapers reports in various local dailies of the State.

Keithellakpam Nabachandra alias Shilheiba of Soibam leikai, who lives in Bangladesh with his family members since many years back and adopted citizenship of that country, was pulled up from his Dhaka residence on February 11 by a combined team of Indian Intelligence sleuths and Bangladeshi police.

Womenfolk raising a demand

The team, in plain clothes, on the pretext of having some words with him, had taken him after assuring the family members to release him in three days, the protester quoted media reports.

However, Nabachandra remains traceless even after eight days since his arrest and there is no any information about him, she said.

Strongly demanding the immediate intervention of the State Govt to trace the whereabouts of Nabachandra, the protesters also asked the State Government to contact the Bangladesh Government to find out his whereabouts.

They also wondered why Nabachandra was arrested by a combined security team of two countries.

The demonstrators further asserted that Nabachandra should be brought here for legal trial if he is arrested in connection with any case, if there is one.

On the other hand, family members of the K Nabachandra submitted a memorandum to the DGP, Manipur seeking to trace him.

The memorandum submitted to the DGP mentioned that such incident is in contravention of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The act of the security personnel was also tantamount to violation of the International Declaration on the Protection of all persons from enforced disappearance, the memo asserted.

Nabachandra left his home in 1992 to join an underground organisation.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

The family lives at Dhaka.

Family members believed that Nabachandra might have been held by the security force because of his involvement in waging a war against India for the independence of Manipur, the memo said.
