Three IEDs recovered

Imphal, February 25 2014 : A powerful IED planted inside an Anganwadi Centre at Andro Machengpat, Imphal East district was detected yesterday while army recovered another IED from Khengjang, Churachandpur district.

The third IED was found inside a mini truck at Khongman.

Local villagers detected a bomb like object inside the Anganwadi Centre at around 2.30 pm yesterday.

Notably, arrangements were being for a public meeting with local MLA Shyamkumar at a public ground close to the Anganwadi Centre.

But the meeting was shifted to another venue after discovering the bomb like object.

Later in the evening a bomb disposal squad confirmed that the object was in fact a bomb.

After the confirmation, police and 40 AR personnel guarded the area throughout the night.

After fire tenders and firemen were kept on stand by, the IED was set off safely at a nearby vacant space at around 2.55 pm today.

At first, the bomb disposal squad planned to set off the IED inside the Anganwadi Centre but the same plan was dropped as it would completely destroy the Anganwadi Centre.

Three IEDs recovered

The bomb disposal tactfully defused the IED and set if off at a safer place.

The IED planted six inches deep at a corner of the Anganwadi Centre and covered with a radio cabinet contained two TNT cakes, remote control device, battery cell and detonator but there were no splinters.

After this morning's Assembly session, Shyamkumar visited the Anganwadi Centre.

He said that the IED was targeting him.

"Counting yesterday's attempt, three attempts have been made on my life," Shyamkumar said.

Th Shyamkumar, then Deputy Speaker, was attacked by triggering an IED blast between Oksu and Ningthemcha Khul, Imphal East district on November 26, 2007.The attack left two escort personnel and a driver injured.

Again on February 7 this year, some unidentified persons who came in a Chevrolet Beat car fired several rounds of shot in front of Shyamkumar's vehicle at Koirengei.

On the other hand, a team of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles detected an IED at Khengjang, Churachandpur district along Tidim Road at around 8.30 am today.

A bomb disposal squad of the army set off the bomb safely.

Meanwhile, KSO Churachandpur has strongly condemned the act of planting the bomb.

He also appealed to all concerned not to plant explosives in civilian areas in future .

The student body also urged the district authority to take up adequate security measures.

The third IED was found inside mini truck parked at the residence of special contractor Thingujam Munindro at Khongman Zone IV, Imphal East district.

Police retrieved the bomb at around 8.30 am today.
