Imphal, June 03 2025:
Tangkhul Avenue Village Authority (TAVA) on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Governor, urging immediate reconstruction of the existing river walls and seven bridges over the Naga River between the Imphal-Ukhrul Dingku Road bridge and Khoyathong bridge to allow free flow of floodwaters and prevent recurring floods in the area.
In the representation addressed to the Governor, TAVA chairman M Ngaranmi stated that several localities including Tangkhul Avenue, Fairyland, Nagaram, Chingmeirong East, Laipham Khunou, Lairikyengbam, Kairang, and Ahullup were completely submerged by floodwaters on May 29, 2024, and again oh June 1, 2025 .
The memorandum highlighted that the affected residents have been suffering from floods every year due to blockages in the flow of the Naga River.
The village authority blamed the flooding on poorly designed infrastructure, including subnormal river tunnels and canal-like river walls that restrict water flow, as well as seven small and outdated bridges constructed along the river stretch connecting the 2nd MR, North AOC, DM University and Khoyathong bridge.
It pointed out that floodwaters are regularly blocked at Fairyland, Nagaram, and Tangkhul Avenue areas, leading to recurrent and devastating inundation during every monsoon season.
Calling the situation a matter of public interest, the memorandum strongly urged the Governor to direct the Water Resources Department and the Public Works Department to dismantle the existing river walls and bridges immediately and construct new standard river walls and properly engineered bridges to ensure that floodwaters can flow freely and without obstruction through the Naga River.
"Without immediate intervention, the affected villages would continue to face destruction and hardship every year, with homes, roads, and public spaces submerged under water due to inadequate flood management infrastructure," TAVA stressed and appealed to the Governor for prompt action and administrative orders to the departments concerned to address the long standing issue and mitigate the yearly suffering of the residents.
